He appears to be old because he has a wrinkled face with a long beard hanging from his chin. His clothing also includes a patterned pink scarf wrapped around his chest and a pink patterned hat.   • Malay Princess in Red and Tan Sarong Kebaya

    The puppet depicts the character of a wealthy female refined character. The face of the puppet is portrayed while the body of the puppet is depicted in profile. The puppet wears the traditional Malay costume of a sarong and kebaya accessorized with high heeled slippers, a necklace, earrings, two bangles and rings. Her kebaya, or fitted blouse, is depicted as short-sleeved, skims the hips, and is tailored to closely fit the body, a style made popular by Malay films produced in Malaysia and Singapore in the 1950s and 1960s. The puppet is also portrayed with a bouffant hairstyle popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Note the long fingers and elongated fingernails symbols of both male and female refined characters. One arm of the puppet is articulated at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. The articulated arm is manipulated by a puppeteer via a bamboo rod attached by a knotted cord to the hand. The leather puppet is supported by a central bamboo rod that is tied to the leather figure via cording. The leather is thin and translucent goatskin.   • Princess in Green and Purple Sarong Kebaya

    The puppet depicts the character of a wealthy female refined character. The face of the puppet is portrayed en face with delicate cutouts typical of the Wayang Gedek and Nang Talung puppetry tradition while the body of the puppet is depicted in profile. The puppet wears the traditional Malay costume of a sarong and kebaya accessorized with a necklace, two bangles and two prominent finger rings. Her kebaya, or fitted blouse, is depicted as short-sleeved, skims the hips, and is tailored to closely fit the body, a style made popular by Malay films produced in Malaysia and Singapore in the 1950s and 1960s. Her sarong is tied to fall at a slight angle in the front and may portray the wearing of kain lepas, or unsewn cloth. The puppet is also portrayed with a bouffant hairstyle popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Note the long fingers and elongated fingernails symbols of both male and female refined characters. Nang Talung and Wayang Gedek often incorporates modern characters and clothing styles into the design of its shadow puppets. Puppet iconography is also known to have been influenced by Western, Bollywood, and Malay film industries. This puppet depicts the clothing of a modern, fashionable Malay woman from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her hairstyle is consistent with this period and she does not wear a crown or headdress. This puppet could potentially play a princess or other refined female lead role. One arm of the puppet is articulated at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. The articulated arm is manipulated by a puppeteer via a bamboo rod attached by a knotted cord to the hand. The articulated arms are manipulated by a puppeteer via bamboo rods attached by a knotted cord to the hand. The leather puppet is supported by a central bamboo rod that is tied to the leather figure via cording. The puppet also features a hinged and articulated jaw with a bamboo hinge which can be moved via a fiber cord in order to enable the puppet to appear to speak. The skin of the puppet has been dyed with black pigment while its clothing and accessories are brightly colored translucent greens and reds.     Depicted in profile in a fighting posture this strong unrefined male deva-like Gergasi (Monster) king figure holds a discus. His head is held high and he is depicted with the face of a green demon with a large bulbous nose, fangs, and a clamped mouth. The puppet is portrayed wearing a yod naga, or serpent peak headdress and a kabang-na crown often worn by demons and monkeys. One arm is articulated at the shoulder, elbow and wrist. The articulated arm is manipulated by a puppeteer via a bamboo rod attached by a knotted cord to the hand. The leather puppet is supported by a central bamboo rod that is tied to the leather figure via cording. Another bamboo rod extends from the central bamboo rod and tied to the leather puppet to support the hand holding the discus.     Description: Articulated dragon with seven joints depicted in profile with mouth open and fangs exposed. The seven sections of the dragon are joined with fiber cord, and a short bamboo rod is attached to both the head and tail of the dragon by fiber cording and a decayed rubber band. Red pigment appears in a semi-circle on the head of the dragon, on the exposed tongue of the dragon, and as vertical stripes along the dragon’s body. Dimension: Height: 6.4cm Width: 76.5cm
  • Naughty Nude Woman

    A nude, pregnant, female puppet, with prominent breasts and genitalia. The puppet has two articulated arms which each have joints at the shoulders, elbows, and wrist. Unlike many other puppets with articulated arms, there are no bamboo rods attached to her arms. The leather puppet is supported by a central bamboo rod tied to the leather figure via cording. The face and upper body of the nude female puppet are depicted in en face, while the lower body depicted in profile. The puppet is portrayed with a hairstyle fashionable in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She is also depicted with a green necklace. Her fingers are thin, curved, and elongated, traits of refined male and female Nang Talung characters. According to Dr. Irving Chan Johnson, such puppets could be used to depict prostitutes in humorous sex scenes, or to portray the courtesans of royal characters. He is depicted with the red face of a demon with a large bulbous nose, fangs, and a clamped mouth. The puppet is portrayed wearing a Mongkut yot chip headdress. Hanuman holds a weapon a sword, trident, discus, and a chakra. Hanuman is portrayed wearing a stylized Kiu headdress In Nang Talung, the character of Hanuman is known as the son of Phra Phai, the Wind God by Nang Sawaha. He is a prominent character in the Ramakien and Ramayana both in Malaysia and Thailand. This puppet is not attached to a bamboo rod and is painted completely black so that it would cast an opaque black shadow through the screen. The leather puppet is supported by a central bamboo rod that is tied to the leather figure via cording. The puppet also features a hinged and articulated jaw with a bamboo hinge which can be moved via a fiber cord in order to enable the puppet to appear to speak. The lower legs and the feet of the puppet are missing, possibly chewed away by rats or Dr. Bank’s pet cats while he was in the field. The puppet was painted black to allow it to cast an opaque black shadow through the puppet screen.
